maine state government
As one of the the state's largest employers, Maine's state government faces significant human resource challenges. These challenges have helped its leaders and managers to understand the need for and value of a diverse workforce, one that includes workers with disabilities. In addition, within its public service role the state government can serve as an example and a resource to other employers interested in hiring workers with disabilities. Go here to find out what Maine is doing in this area.
An early effort involved the state government learning more about its workforce, in particular its employees with a disability. In 2007 the state surveyed its employees, learning some interesting things:
- Within all survey respondents (3,446 employees), ten percent (339 people) reported they had a disability.
- Slightly over half reported that their disability started before working for the State (54%)
- Just over half (53%) reported that they had requested a job accommodation. For those who had not requested an accommodation, 68% reported it was because one was not needed. The two major types of job accommodations have included adjustments to a work station (40%) and flexible work schedule and/or location (23%)
